Description: Born into an impoverished boyar family in the early 14th century Russia, St. Sergius grew to become the founder of numerous monasteries across his homeland, working to establish the communal monastic life. It was he that blessed St. Dmitry Donskoy to engage the Tatars in battle, foretelling the first decisive victory over a foe that had been considered undefeatable.
Despite the reverence for him in his own time, St. Sergius remained ever a humble monk, refusing the metropolitan see of Moscow when it was offered him. All who came to him, whether noble or peasant, he received with equal love and honor.
Today, St. Sergius of Radonezh is one of the most venerated saints in all Russia, and stands for us as a model of humility and dedication to serving the Lord.
