Description: Silouan was an unlettered young peasant from the heart of European Russia. He finished his military service in the autumn of 1892 and within a week set off for the Russian Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mt Athos. There, rooted in a tradition reaching back to the very beginnings of Christian monasticism, he came to a personal experience of Christianity akin to that of the Desert Fathers.
In this account of Silouan's life, personality, and teaching, by his disciple Archimandrite Sophrony, we witness the spiritual struggles which made Silouan truly a "Staretz" or "Elder": a monk who God-given wisdom and insight enable him to serve as a spiritual guide to others. As in Staretz Silouan's own writings, gathered in a companion volume, Wisdom from Mount Athos, we find God's message to the man who would "put on" God: "learn to be humble," "keep thy mind in hell, and despair no."
